Sleep Apnea: Sleep Easier Using These Tips

Many people don’t realize that sleep apnea can be potentially fatal over time if not diagnosed and treated by a doctor. This is why learning about the condition and how to treat it is so important. Keep reading for some helpful tips on getting started.

Even kids can suffer from sleep apnea. There are a multitude of symptoms that can determine whether your child has sleep apnea. Oftentimes these symptoms cab be associated with ADHD, but first you should consult with your doctor to see if the problem is sleep apnea.

TIP! Make sure you’re using your throat and jaw muscles. Sleep apnea can be brought on by weak muscles, so doing these exercises can help.

You can reduce the symptoms of sleep apnea by making the muscles in your throat stronger. Sleep apnea is caused by the obstruction of breathing that results from the collapse of the soft tissues in the back of the throat. When the muscles have strengthened, collapsing is less likely to occur, thus keeping your airways free.

Do not lay on your back to sleep if you have a sleep apnea condition. Most apnea patients are “back sleepers”, making it more likely that airway obstructions can occur. Use pillows or specially designed cushions that will make sure you go through the entire night on your side only.

Exercise your tongue and minimize sleep apnea symptoms. Repeat vowels out loud over and over for 3 minutes each day. Press your tongue tip to the back of your front teeth, and quickly slide it to the back of your mouth repeatedly for three minutes. Do both once per day. Like other exercises for the body, muscles in the tongue and throat will be strengthened and therefore remain tighter while you sleep.

TIP! Go to sleep on your side because sleeping looking straight up can make sleep apnea worse. You can use something like pillows or blankets so that you will not want to sleep on your back.

Sleep Apnea

If you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, take your condition seriously. Stick with any treatment plan your doctor prescribes, including nightly use of your CPAP machine if necessary. Sleep apnea is not only a condition that makes you feel fatigued, but it also increases the risk of depression, stroke and many other serious health problems.

Try getting fitted for a custom-made mouth guard. These special guards are designed to help people who suffer with sleep apnea. This is something that works well instead of using a CPAP, and it’s more comfortable. The mouth guard helps by keeping the airway open and providing stability for the soft tissues.

TIP! If sleep apnea affects you, do not use sleeping pills. Using these pills can oftentimes aggravate the condition and make it worse.

Everyone knows that sleep apnea is frustrating to live with. Fatigue, interrupted sleep, irritability and the dangers of sleep apnea are cause for sufferers to worry. Use this information to help you go about your treatment against sleep apnea.
